Hello everybody,

I have a general question concerning Code Saturne.
I want to start a project in the university with the goal to simulate the filling process of a mould.
The mould is in vacuum at the beginning and has to be filled with a two component adhesive, which flows inside the mould cause of the vacuum.
The goal is to simulate the filling process of the mould with a special interest in possible air bubble formation.
Therefore I would need a two phase model (air, adhesive) for the filling process. Is Code Saturne in general suitable to work on a problem like this? Is there a model available to simulate a flow where one substance replaces another over time?

I hope someone can give me an advice if it makes sence to start a project like this with Code Saturne.

Hello,

Code_Saturne is mainly single-phase flow oriented (most multiphase flow work is done in NEPTUNeE_CFD, partially based on Code_Saturne, but not purely EDF's property, and which is not open source).

There has been some work in the past on VOF functionnality in the code, but nothing has been merged, so this is not available either.

Still, as you can define variable user properties, a practical solution (used in at least one of our test cases, with a 2-gas mix), is to define a user scalar describing the "presence fraction" of each of the components you are injecting, and define user physical properties (density, viscosity, ...) based on the fraction of those components at any given cell.

You man need to take extra precautions (to account for extra terms) if your fluid is non-Newtonian.
