AbstractThe present work is focused on the evaluation of wave–current interactions through numerical simulations of combined wave and current flows with the Code_Saturne ( Archambeau et al., 2004), an advanced CFD solver based on the RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes) equations. The objectives of this paper are twofold. Firstly, changes in the mean horizontal velocity and the horizontal-velocity amplitude profiles are studied when waves are superposed on currents. The influence of various first and second order turbulence closure models is addressed. The results of the numerical simulations are compared to the experimental data of Klopman, 1994 and Umeyama, 2005. Secondly, a more detailed study of the shear stresses and the turbulence viscosity vertical profile changes is also pursued when waves and currents interact. This analysis is completed using the data from Umeyama (2005). A relationship between a non-dimensional parameter involving the turbulence viscosity and the Ursell number is subsequently proposed.
